The hill was once the site of a sanctuary to nymphs associated with childbirth. The nearby modern church of Agia Marina has a similar association — as pregnant women would slide down a smooth rock near the church in the hopes of easy childbirth.
Today’s area includes a garden and observatory built by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen with funds from the philanthropist Baron Sina.
