Ionian Islands

Green and fertile, the Ionian islands are characterized by olive groves and towering cypresses. Except for Lefkada island, these islands were never captured by the Turks – this fact, coupled by their proximity to western Europe make them quite unique from the other chains of Greek Islands. Major islands include: Corfu, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Paxos and Zakynthos.
