Once the Benakis family’s home, a magnificent neo-classical mansion houses one of Athen’s best museums.
The collections span over 2,000 years, from the 3rd century BC to the 20th century, and include a diverse selection of impressive Greek art, paintings, and jewelry. There are also folk costumes on display and political memorabilia.
There are many highlights worthy of mention, but two stand out.
The El Faiyum Portrait
This Hellenistic portrait of a man, painted on linen, dates from the 2nd-4th century AD.
The Icon of St. Anne
This icon of St Anne probably dates from the 18th century. St. Anne is depicted holding the Virgin Mary, who, in turn, is holding a white lily, symbolizing her purity.
