The Byzantine Museum

Mouse Island, Corfu

Housed in an elegant Florentine style mansion dating from 1850, this museum spans 1,500 years of Byzantine art and architecture. The layout of the museum proceeds chronologically and the floor plan has been cleverly laid out to parallel Byzantine church layouts.

Particularly interesting are the 15th century Frankish sculptures from their occupation of Greece. There are also many religious objects and pieces of religious art. Of course, the icons are stunning, none more so than the 1784 creation of Makarios of Galatista, a monk from Mount Athos. His work is the Virgin Nursing the Child.
