The Plaka is the historic old town of Athens. The area is the oldest, continually inhabited area of the city. The neighborhood is known for its small shops, tavernas, and pedestrian-friendly vibe; as such, it is a favorite with locals and tourists alike.
One area, the Anafiotika, is known for its whitewashed houses and winding streets. If it resembles a Cycladic island, it’s deliberate. This area was built in the 19th century by settlers from the island of Anafi.
